Dial Depth Gage

Dial depth gage is an accurate tool for measurement. In this case, dial depth gage comes in many types, so you have to be careful in choosing the right one. The followings are several types of dial depth gage you can choose in the market:

1. Mitutoyo Dial Depth Gage

This is, in effect, a dial depth gage with a depth base attached. The depth base spans the opening, keeping the gage steady and giving you perpendicular entry into the hole, slot or groove. A lifting lever at the top of the gage allows you to easily lift and release the gaging plunger (the indicator spindle). Since the spindle pressure is constant and slight, the readings are not likely to be distorted because of over-tightening in the case of micrometers, or unconscious fudging in the case of calipers.

The use of this dial depth gage allows you to choose from a variety of resolutions and accuracies up to .0001″. It is also possible for you to buy depth bases with 2-1/2″ or 4″ spanning widths and attach these to any dial gage you already own.

Each dial depth gage probably has a spindle range of one inch. You can reach into deeper holes by attaching extensions, usually up to 8 inches. All extensions are included with your dial depth gage, but these can also be bought separately. They are used for the same purpose with any dial gage. Be sure the thread sizes match, either 4-48 or M2.5. Before use, calibrate the dial depth gage by placing it on a flat (granite) surface and adjusting the position of the depth base, so that the gage reads zero.

2. Dial Depth Gages – Series 527

This dial depth gage is easier and faster reading depth gage. Made of hardened stainless steel, the base and measuring surfaces of this gage are hardened and microlapped. Complete with fitted carrying case, this gage features 4″ standard base size and fine-adjustment feature. Wider extension bases are available as optional item.

3. Back Plunger Dial Depth Gages

This dial depth gage is designed with the Back Plunger Indicators for upward facing readings. With the supplied extension rods, depths of up to 8″ can be measured. With dial face: 50–0 (one rev.) and accuracy (forward): less than ±0.001″, this gage is completed with standard accessories like extension rods (4 pcs.): .5, 1, 2, 4″, exchangeable stylus (1 pc.), and Allen wrench (1 pc.).

4. 0 – 22″ X .001″ Dial Indicator Depth Gage Set Hardened New

With range: 0-22″, base: 4″, resolution: 0.001″, and indicator travel: 0-1″, this dial depth gage might be your right option. The bottom surface of the base is precision ground and lapped and hardened, while 6 rod extensions can be connected together for a full 0-22″ capacity. Sets in wooden case with satin chrome finish, this gage includes 3 different shape indicator tip; standard, cone shape, and straight rod style.

5. Starrett Dial Depth Gage

This dial depth gage is light, reliable and accurate for measurements to .001″ or 0.02 mm and will fit in most toolboxes. It features sharp, easy-to-read dial graduations of .001 – .100″ or 0.02 – 2 mm in one revolution. For ease-of-handling and versatility, this gage features lock screw for the dial bezel, lock screw for holding the measuring rod position, optional base extensions of 7″ and 12″ (175 and 300 mm) that are available to increase the base span on both models, and removable hook attachment that permits reading from the edge of a work piece to edges of slots, shoulders, etc.

Meanwhile, for accuracy and long-life, this dial depth gage features hardened, stainless steel base, measuring bar, rack and gears, and positive split gear anti-backlash control.
